A Small
Change Can Make a Big Difference
Many people hardly breathe at all.
To know what natural breathing looks like, watch a small baby breathing.
You’ll see that babies take effortless, deep breaths – like waves moving
through the body. The way we breathe has a tremendous impact on the
way we experience ourselves and our lives. It affects how we think,
feel and behave.
With shallow breathing, we tend to
be more anxious and more reactive. With deeper breathing, we are more
relaxed and better able to respond to whatever is happening in our lives.
Relaxed, deeper breathing helps us to be more centred and focused, to rest
in our depths. Fresh perspectives become available.
With shallow breathing, your
thoughts are more scattered and you tend to feel that there is not enough
time. Your brain wave patterns look busy and there is a lack of space.
You get more identified – caught up with thoughts and emotions. Deepen
your breathing and your brain wave patterns slow down – the waves have more
space. As identification dissolves, there is greater clarity.
You open to your inner source of wisdom, peace and creativity.
It may sound surprising that so much
is possible just from fuller breathing. Well, nature tends to give us
what we need and it can often be simpler than we think. The mind loves to
over-complicate. This often keeps us from making minor changes in our lives
that can lead to much greater shifts and transformation. So try it out for
yourself for a month and note the differences.
Bringing your attention to the
breath is a way to be more present, more aware. Put a few signs up
with the word ‘Breathe’ as a reminder, e.g. on the computer, your
desk, the fridge …
